log #4: holding things
maddie's secret needs emulsification
Maddie’s Secret finally had a screening at The Park Theatre. Written and directed by John Early, the film is a satire on millennial food culture. Maddie is a food content creator with an eating disorder. The first half of the film focuses more on millennial food culture with a lot of IYKYK millennial humour while the other half on the eating disorder with a more serious tone and some one liners sprinkled in. It’s difficult but not impossible to address a film about an eating disorder with humour and care. Early took a more cautious approach and fell a bit short sticking the landing. Gay culture is the perfect host for an eating disorder. It’s common and “normal” to hear gay men leading up to pride discussing their crash diets hoping to shed a few pounds. It’s a slippery slope to disordered eating. After years, decades of unlearning toxic diet (carbs bad) and gay culture (body shaming), I have given myself permission to eat whichever foods I want and to not label foods as morally good or bad. Since it’s peak summer, all my cravings are leaning towards Earnest Ice Cream’s seasonal vegan flavours. Last month was Blueberries and Cream which they forgot to put in a waffle cone. The execution was ideal. Not too sweet and texturally pleasant. I am in favour of fruit compote swirled in, not blended. Cookies and Cream which I don’t think is seasonal but my first time trying it. I generally don’t like cookies and cream but it was a hot day as we made our way to Italy Day on the Drive. On the way out of the festival, I stopped by Audiopile (as I always do when I am in the neighbourhood) and picked up Geese on vinyl. There will be no Geese shaming here with the exception of them skipping Vancouver on their Getting Killed Again tour. Tommy’s Whole Grain will have donuts on either Friday’s and/or Saturday’s and they announce it on their IG and since I don’t have IG, I have the pleasure of inconveniencing myself by walking to the bakery in hopes they would have aforementioned donuts. They didn’t have any so I left with a cookie and a brownie which were good, but it wasn’t a donut. Went swimming at Kits Pool a few weeks ago and that’s the view from Batch above the pool which is unreal. The IPA I drank was just ok. If I had enough drinks, I would cry thinking about the view. I biked roughly one whole hour along the sea wall to Wreck Beach and once you hit UBC there’s a slow, gradual incline that creeps up on you like a stalking mountain lion. I succumbed to the mountain lion and walked my bike up only to walk down hundreds of steps to get to the beach. Isn’t this naturalized garden stunning? I noticed it on my way home picking up a loaf of sourdough bread. Finally, I am committing to one fit pic a month. I purchased oversized navy shorts from COS at 70% off. If styled incorrectly, they could be mistaken for boxers.
