Hello,
I had some ideas in mind that I wanted to write about this week, but I didn’t have enough mental energy to break through it. Instead, I am eating a handful of these dark chocolate covered blueberries from Healthy Crunch as I write this. Broke my recently instated sugar rule. Not feeling very energized or inspired these days. It’s too expensive to do anything and the weather just isn’t hot enough.
The other day, a group of us went to queer wine night at Paradise Grapevine. Lesbians everywhere. Someone propositioned us to be on their Tik Tok. Waiting for my gen z fame on @jessxlinn page. How do you even open the app???
Anywayyyy, a friend ordered a trio of snacks and I soon discovered my friend’s olive hierarchy. This might be a contentious subject but here it goes. The order in which olives reign supreme according to different palates:
Daniel: black, green kalamata
Vanessa: I forgot what yours is (after two drinks and very loud queers), but you put kalamata up there didn’t you??
Me: green, black, kalamata
If you don’t like olives then I think we shouldn’t be friends.

Sorry, I spiralled a bit this week by reading too much doomsday media.
The style secrets of Swedish pop star Lykke Li at Financial Times. She essentially has my dream home. // My favourite building is my home. I wake up every morning here and think, “How did I get so lucky?” I put out a call to the universe. I said, “I want a midcentury home that no one has messed up, that’s small, one-level, with a garden, a view, a fireplace and a bathtub and one extra guest room,” and somehow it appeared years later. And the view is so good: that classic LA city lights thing, like in the movie Heat. //
Inside This Collector’s 70-Piece Comme des Garçons Collection at Vogue. Michelle Elie is iconic and her collection is extraordinary. 10 minutes of PURE JOY!
Substack has cut 13 people via TechCrunch. Also this fact, who are the top 10 writers??? // Substack writers are earning around $90 million a year — though the top 10 writers earn $20 million of that pile of cash. //
I recently learned about Sable Island National Park Reserve in Halifax. There are over 500 horses.
My first dosa finally, from Madras Masala:
While doing laundry, I read Solveig Gold Is Proud to Be the Wife of a ‘Canceled’ Princeton Professor at The New York Times in their style section. I was confounded at the purpose of this article and who it was for. Then, Reddit came a long and found a community of like-minded thinkers.
I was under the assumption that season four of Stranger things was the last and that the final episode had no closure. I now realize that season five will be its last. Honestly, the last two episodes were just ok and the 1 month break was not necessary.
‘The Golden Age of Thrifting Is Over’ at The New York Times. I have been thrifting since I was a kid with my parents and then in high school to present day. And the golden age for me was in my early 20s. Now, every trip to the thrift store is a disappointment.
This piece, When the Czarinas Ruled the Front Row by The New York Times brings me back to the early 2010s and it is fascinating! I remember vividly Miroslava Duma wearing a lot of Kenzo when it was brought back to life by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. But honestly, I could care less now about their relevance because they have money. All you need is family money or marry an oligarch.
We Should Criticize Corporate Greed All the Time at Jacobin. Daniel and I discuss this subject at least 7 times a week and it is mentally taxing to the point of outrage and then hopelessness. // What is the goal of a private firm in capitalism? To make a profit. Or, more precisely, to maximize profit. Every other consideration — worker well-being, consumer interests, environmental sustainability — is secondary, if considered at all. //
To compliment above: Corporations Are Exploiting Inflation to Increase Profits at Jacobin. Also that fucker Galen Weston Jr has hiked tofu by at least 30%. Small shops around the city are still selling organic tofu around $3-3.50 and No Frills sells it for almost $5!
Ontario has found 11 species at risk along the planned route of Highway 413: documents at The Narwhal. Dougie, maybe you could put that money back into healthcare? LOL » // The Ford government weakened Ontario’s species at risk rules in 2019. The new regime allows the Environment Ministry to issue permits for development that would harm endangered species habitat, as long as industry pays a fee for a fund that’s meant to help species recover elsewhere. //
I told Daniel I wanted to buy this Lemaire bag and he said we have other priorities… THE BAG IS THE PRIORITY. (My SSENSE purchase came in and it’s a bit tight fitting, but I will make it work and I can’t exchange it because it sold the fuck out! I could return it, but I don’t want to….. so……)
Ending with happy thoughts:
Live. Laugh. Love. Don’t spiral.

NO FRIENDS WERE HARMED FROM NOT LIKING OLIVES.
"What is the goal of a private firm in capitalism? To make a profit. Or, more precisely, to maximize profit." is a great line!
