Hello!
I have neglected my partner and child the last two weeks in the pursuit of Selling Sunset. Let’s call it “me time” in the name of self-care. What started as a show to take my mind off being burnt out from work turned into a marathon with bottles of wine in bed. The show has the complete package of a reality show. There is the backdrop of LA, but you really only see Hollywood Hills and one quick sprint to Los Feliz. There is exorbitant wealth and high commission on the line. There is botox. There is breast implants. There is Christine. Above all, there is straight white women drama.
This show provides fodder for our sociological imagination. The storyline that I find most curious on the show are about platonic relationships and asking, when should a friendship end?
In season one, Christine and Mary are best friends. They listen to each other’s problems, console each other and more often than not, Christine is starting drama over petty shit with Mary. Christine apologizes, Mary accepts said apology and a new cycle begins with Christine upping the drama.
I always questioned why Mary continued with the friendship. Or why people, in general, continue to maintain these types of one way friendships. But like all abusive relationships, platonic or not, it’s easier said than done to end them. The only person who has the ability to remove themselves from the situation is Mary. And in season 4. She finally castrated the friendship. Mary is free.
People change. Friendships change. Life happens. Mary is free.
A love letter to Selling Sunset.

Daniel’s first time at Allan Gardens! At bit disappointing for a first trip because they’re doing renovations and there are so many poinsettias which I find is the ugliest holiday plant.
I can confirm that east end banh mi’s are not very good and palatable. I couldn’t even eat half of my sandwich even though I didn’t eat anything all day in anticipation.
Finally went to the theatre and watched Drive My Car. It was beautifully shot, long and tedious. It was THREE fucking hours. Honestly I did not know what I was expecting. I stand by that if this movie was 1.5 hours shorter it would have been a masterpiece.
This article from The New Yorker, The Women Behind the Thirteen-Year-Olds of “PEN15”. A thorough and intimate profile of Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle. Would 100% have them in my social circle. We all share the same birth year. Call me, okay?
Thai Country Kitchen is a hidden gem and I highly recommend their curries which is the only thing I have ordered to date. Khao San Road was a 1 hour wait! TCK, 15 minutes and just as good.
Finally subscribed to New York Magazine. I can finally read The Cut without that damn pay wall. I suggest you build an app NYM! The deal, $24US, for annual subscription, is $30CAD. That exchange rate hurts so much.
I know everything and nothing about Ssense. The Sensibility of Ssense from The New York Times. I also want everything and nothing from the Ssense sale. My general rule is wait until further reductions (at least 70%, come on people!) and if it’s still there, it’s meant to be.
Simu Liu, fame by way of cameo on Selling Sunset season 4, was in my old office, which is now a studio for rent for photoshoots. We actually just moved right below, one floor down.
Have you considered a Kacey Musgrave’s puzzle for the gay in your life?
Davina. Davina! DAVINA! A Q&A with Davina Potratz via Vulture. Maya and Davina are underrated players on Selling Sunset.
I committed four whole seasons of Selling Sunset to two weeks of my life and I am okay with it. You should be too.

I have been making hummus at home for a few years now because I find store bought lacks flavour. Also because it’s super easy and cheap to make. After watching this video from Middle Eats, The Secret To SMOOTH Homemade Hummus, my hummus recipe feels defeated. There’s an episode on homemade baklava that I will attempt during holiday break!
Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast) for The Creative Independent. I think it’s important that artists acknowledge creative endeavours as “we”, instead of “I” when more than 1 party is involved. Japanese breakfast is the former.
Newsletter Exclusive! Spotify Wrapped 2021! I feel validated. I am not that sad IRL even though I listen to a lot of melancholic music.
Now that we’ve gone deep and I showed you my top artist, who is yours??
See you next week? Maybe? I don’t know. Every Substack writer is going on break and I might hop on that bandwagon too.

I hope you try making baklava on Saturday 💗
this is truly the highlight of my week
