Good morning,
I hope you’re feeling trapped in your apartment this week like I am. This is by choice and also not by choice. We are seeing temperatures drop as low as -28 degrees. With that observation, I see the world outside of me as hostile. While I often yearn to go for a walk out of fear of being enclosed in a small living space, I revel in the art of being sedentary when there is no other option.
During the holiday break, I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish. I accomplished nothing on that list and I have made peace with it. Everyone around me had some manifestation of their own list, only to surrender, tossing away society's norms around productivity.
There’s this podcast called Obsessed with Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone. This podcast is about things they are obsessed with. From Selling Sunset to ASMR. That’s it. It’s genius. Considering the current climate of the world, I could hop back into NYT’s The Daily, but do I want to spiral? No.
Here are some things I obsessed over holiday break:
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
I first heard about Japanese Breakfast last year when Road Head would show up on my Spotify playlist. I didn’t think much of it as I usually do with new artists. Then eventually, that song and more of their singles would continue to appear. Jubilee dropped and I was reeled in. Not at first, but ultimately I became hooked.
Correction, Vice Munchies did do a series with Michelle Zauner, Close to Home, exploring food history. At that point, around 2019, I assumed she was more of a food journalist than musician.
Crying in H Mart was initially birthed as a long form essay for The New Yorker. It received acclaimed reviews from critics and everyday readers. That same essay is the first chapter in her book. I voraciously read the book in days wishing it was longer when I had nearly reached the end. I was also craving Korean food while reading. I also stopped by H Mart on the way to pick up the book, coincidentally.
I almost cried.
Nintendo Switch - Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
A present for Daniel so he could play Pokemon. Then we picked up Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. We played it every night for 2-3 hours over holiday. No regrets.
I am officially a gaymer.
I had no intention of purchasing a new phone this year, but here I am. Upgrading from the Pixel 3 didn’t leave much room for surprise as the software and UX is the same. The major selling point was the advancement in hardware. The Pixel 6 is huge and it weighs a ton. Not a fan. Give me a tiny phone for children. There’s a market for small phones.
Anyway, I spent hours mindlessly playing with it.
I am truly living my barista dreams. I am normally questioning the quality of at home espresso machines because commercial machines of course have better pressure. However, Breville truly delivers in quality that you can taste. If you like the idea of spending some extra time in the morning making espresso, might I suggest you purchase one yourself.
Before, I would do pour over, which consumed a lot of beans. Compared to this espresso machine, a 1 lb bag would last a week longer.
Once you go crema, you never go back. Lol.
Homosexual Agenda
A very short and concise HA because I didn’t taking that many notes..
Have I told you that my favourite scary movie is Scream? Of course I did, right here. Scream 5, technically just Scream, is out this Friday everywhere excepting fucking Ontario and Quebec. Do I fly to BC to watch Scream? They Screamed, We Screamed. Now They’re in ‘Scream’ Again for The New York Times.
Search Party Finally Grows Up over at The Cut. The final season of Search Party came out last week and binged it over the weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed the ludicrous antics of millennials navigating the world. I also stand by my theory that TV shows should be no more than 5 seasons long.
Not feeling Joseph Altuzarra’s new genderful line, Altu. The logo feels cheap for the price point. You’re 38, why do you want to relive your youth. Stop obsessing over youth culture. It’s giving me T by Alexander Wang. With His New Line, Joseph Altuzarra Honors His Teen Self for The New York Times.
Linoleum flooring is cool, actually for Vox. Kinda fun, right?
Animals also have privilege and experience intergenerational wealth. “Those young, pine-cone-rich squirrels, the scientists say, are children of privilege.” Tax the fuck out of the squirrels. Checking Privilege in the Animal Kingdom for The New York Times.
I feel like I forgot how to write from taking such a long break.
So… what’s new?
Perry
Love love love!!! Lino iconic, Altu not iconic
UPDATE: espresso machine gifted by Daniel 😘
