Hello,
Let’s jump to it shall we!
When I first listened to this ep of Maybe Baby, I knew I had to share it. However, I was concerned because it was behind a paywall. But because Haley thought it was so pivotal to share, it’s now available to all. Everyone should listen to it! Some highlights that I have mutual sentiments about: feeling shame about shopping on Amazon (I only shop there if I can’t find it anywhere else and I feel extreme guilt about it), divesting from beauty culture (I completely stopped purchasing retinols, acids, etc because I believe they do more harm than good and we should ask ourselves why we want to look “younger”) and when to ask yourself when is it enough (financially) because constantly wanting more money doesn’t make you happier.
We all just fell for Amazon’s made-up holiday yet again at Vox. Co-opting the far right: WAKE UP PEOPLE!
I am aware of the The Idol discourse and I am over The Idol discourse. I think we, as a society, need to re-evaluate Euphoria in the wake of Sam Levinson writing and directing The Idol. And what that means for Euphoria. Honestly, short answer for me is that I probably won’t be watching Euphoria season 3. Of course, Abel Tesfaye should be held accountable as well. the idol is the worst show of the year by Mina Le.
This article has made the rounds on the internet and I personally want to endorse it as well. Is Ssense hurting the cool-clothes ecosystem? at Blackbird Spyplane. I have a greater appreciation for smaller shops and SSENSE will ultimately be the last resort. It will be akin to Amazon, sadly.
A pleasant profile of Athena Calderone and that Brooklyn brownstone and open shelving kitchen. I still dream of it. I would love the opportunity to go into debt in renovating a home one day. What Happens When You Get So Influential That You’re Bored by Your Own Aesthetic? at The New York Times.
McMansions are making a comeback, unfortunately. These designs are so universally safe that they fall into the trap of current trends that will eventually be outdated in the near future. The Modern Farmhouse Is Today’s McMansion. And It’s Here to Stay at The New York Times. // Fans of the style often describe it as classic and timeless, but the architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange begs to differ. “It’s basically modernism in drag,” she said of a style that manages to hide modernist elements — big open windows and open floor plans — behind creature comforts like gables and covered porches. Americans are drawn to the look, she said, because it has all the trappings of modernism without actually looking particularly modern. “Americans aren’t really comfortable buying modern houses,” she said. “That is a rich person’s architecture.”
We welcomed a new mayor! Olivia Chow! I was going through a few pieces from Toronto Life about why people are choosing to vote for certain candidates and I found the general consensus of why quite alarming. Ultimately, people vote for individualistic agendas over collective societal interests. Maybe not surprising because Toronto is such a neo-liberal city. I am hopeful for a more pedestrian, bike and public transit friendly city and a reduction of cars in the city.
Google is being extra sus because the powers that be are sending me super conservative news content to my news feed. I think if the everyday person wasn’t aware, they would truly believe in the content. Which segues to…
Meet the Humans Trying to Keep Us Safe From AI at Wired. A pretty bullshit system where men create things and women come to clean up after their mess. Not surprising! I still remember the time when Google fired Timnit Gebru for calling them out and Google just essentially fired her. If they didn’t fire her I would probably not be getting conservative news! Probably.

I love a good publicity stunt. And I am truly happy with how this turned out. Lol. The Shein Influencer Trip Was a New Low by Amy Odell at Back Row. Also this piece by Amy Odell: An Uncomfortable Couture Week During French Protests.
Actors! They’re just like us. Interviewing. Auditioning. We just want to get paid. Tavi Gevinson is interviewed about the importance of being paid for auditioning. Actors Want to Be Paid for Auditions — and Their Contract Already Guarantees It at Jacobin.
A night swim at Sunnyside Pool during a heat wave. Everyone should experience a night swim when the opportunity arises.
An evening hang at Hanlan’s. Everyone should experience an evening at the beach. Real nice time with no alcohol and a good book.
An interview with Mike Hadreas of Perfume Genius at The Creative Independent. Really good practical advice about starting anything: just do it.
I watched Past Lives and I cried three times. If that isn’t a compelling argument I don’t know what is.
Barbie marketing is currently at its apex and I am fatigued. But this one on AD featuring Barbie historian Whitney Mallett is hilarious. I proceeded with caution thinking it was a hollow video about just Barbie houses. It includes important design trends and cultural leaps in women’s liberation. It is crystal clear that the 1962 home is a winner (mid-century) and 1990 was the loser (mcmansion). Mallett describing the windows in the 1990 mcmansion “Italian palace, tudor bay. why?!” Gave me a really good laugh. Design Expert Breaks Down Barbie Dreamhouse Evolution (1962-Now) at AD.

Wow. Already halfway through July. I have been mocked for saying “it’s summer” to justify hedonist summer acts.
