Hello,
A few days ago we experienced a heatwave that reached high 30s and some days reaching almost 40. Technically we have a few days left of summer so it was warranted. I welcomed the high temps with a ribbed tank top and 50 SPF sunscreen and a bike ride to the pool only to be turned off by the long line up that I just turned around and was robbed of fun.
Imminently, I will be unemployed and excited to get into unemployment routine. I have no choice but to opt out of capitalism. Summer recap where all I exclaimed was that culture was and still is dead. Culture is dead.
Weyes Blood opened for Proenza Schouler and I am in awe. She also composed the music for the show which includes In Holy Flux and Movies. You can watch the complete show here.
I finished season two of Selling the OC in three days and everyone is annoying. I couldn’t get enough. Tyler and Hall were eye fucking each other the whole time. And Brandi needs to not project her traditional hetero values onto Alex (albeit another hetero). Kayla gurl, you are in some deep revenge loop that you need to get out of. And who is Rachel?
The Bear season two finale is very American. The second season — spoiler — prioritizes work over personal relationships and we find Carmy inevitably single. I read a critique somewhere (maybe The Cut?) about how Claire is not a real and nuanced character because her whole identity is Carmy. Wake up writers! Give Molly Gordon what she deserves!
Power Bottoms for Vulture featuring Ayo Edebiri, Rachel Sennott, and Emma Seligman. I feel supportive womxn energy in this friendship. I am still waiting for an invite to watch Bottoms in theatre.
A couple years ago, I used to be smug about zero waste. And then I unlearned individual responsibility and now I just still do my part, but 99% blame corporations. The Rise and Fall of the Zero-Waste Trash Jar for Wired.
Pumpking spice is here to devour us and I am okay with it. Not that you should be ordering from Starbucks, but if you do, the PSL syrup is NOT vegan. This scone is from Bad Attitude and I highly recommend with some oat milk. No, cashew. Yes cashew milk.
The end of cool small cars at Blackbird Spyplane. I feel seen. I perpetually lament the way cars look nowadays because 9/10 times they are always ugly. Any boxy car from the 80s is super fun and should make a comeback. And this wonderful interview about technical pleating known as arashi shibori with Julia Heuer.
Glossy by Marisa Meltzer released this week and is making the rounds in the beauty and fashion media circuit. Really good PR team Meltzer. I probably won’t read the book because I lived through it all as it happened in real time. But here is a recap from The Unpublishable, How Glossier Sold Us Nothing.
The whole house tour of Molly Baz and Ben Willett’s house at Deeply Madly Modern. Head straight to 23:47 if you came just for the bathroom.
The main theme of my photos the last two months have been seagulls. Seagull(s) on roofs. Sorry Henry.
Emilia Petrarca is on Substack. EMILIA PETRARCA IS ON SUBSTACK. Alert mainstream media. Honestly, I don’t know her. But after much sleuthing she used to write for The Cut so I most likely have read her work. Do not sleep on Shop Rat. As someone who is not on social, I learned about the virality of the Tinder Tabi Thief via Shop Rat. It is so funny I wish I lived it in real time on a cell phone. The latest newsletter, Fashion Week Dispatch: Part 1, does not hold back. Some hightlights:
NYFW is, for the most part, not cool. I don’t mean that in a bitchy way, I’m just crunching the numbers. Big brands and billionaire adjacents are the only ones who can afford to participate anymore, and even they are probably spending more money than they should. If smaller brands do put on a show, they’re usually forced to do so in corporate hellholes like Hudson Yards, or find sponsors like Cash App.
Wanna feel old? Mansur Gavriel celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Sunday.
If you told me Ralph Lauren’s latest collection was actually from Spring 2003, I would believe you.
All summer, I noticed men in pearls and I find the trend so annoying. In the sense that because they are clearly straight fuck boys who feel okay wearing it only because the likes of Harry Styles wore it. Straight men will only take risks when things are normalized.
Tavi Gevinson is on Substack. Please make an informed decision.
Culture is back, baby.
