It will be a high of 31 degrees today (don’t question it, just enjoy it) and I don’t want to code and I don’t want to write this newsletter. I just want to be outside and ride my bike.
Everyone should revisit this song:
Will Sharpe, of The White Lotus fame, will be directing Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart. I am already crying, like I did so many times while reading the book.
I did read the whole interview between Law Roach and Lindsay Peoples at The Cut. I thought it was interesting and vague at the same time. I want details Law Roach. Details! Then I found out there’s also a podcast, which I would have much preferred.
This ethereal performance of God Turn Me Into a Flower by Weyes Blood.
Impromptu visit to the AGO with a DJ set by TR/ST and it was honestly really bad. I’m not a DJ, but I know when someone just hits next. No transition, no beat matching, pure laziness. The friend that invited us told us about the Wolfgang Tillmans exhibit. Who is famous for that portrait of Frank Ocean. Also this iconic portrait of Chloe Sevigny. He was also in attendance and dancing to TR/ST. Highly recommend visiting the exhibit!!!!
A succint interview with Ti West at AnOther about the making of Pearl. Pearl: The Inside Story of Ti West’s Soon-To-Be-Cult Slasher.
Highly recommend signing this petition at Change: Prevent octopus farming and imports of farmed octopus from coming into Canada!
The Composed Beauty of a Big-Ass Salad at Grub Street. I am astounded by how many words can be used to discuss salads. I needed more. An underrated meal IMO.
If you’re in NYC, please eat at Lula Mae for me and tell me if you recommend. Clinton Hill Is Now Home to Some of NYC’s Most Exciting Cambodian Dishes at Eater.
Turns out that there are two types of people you can easily manipulate (a working theory): conservatives and Disney fans. Why fans say trips to Disney World are now ‘incredibly complicated’ to pull off at CNBC.
BOYGENIUS INTERMISSION
Did you watch the film directed by Kristen Stewart? Did you?? And did you watch Over/Under at Pitchfork where they discuss Google Drive? The mundanity of Google Drive is refreshing. Lol.
Did you proceed to listen to the record?
Did you attempt to get concert tickets like Henry did?
The serif font is making its ambitious — and fashionable — comeback! When in Doubt, Tweak the Logo at The NYT.
I did not finish season three of Succession. I think I just didn’t fully get it enough. Kind of how it took me a while to watch Arrested Development. Maybe I just feel swallowed by its discourse and fandom that I might have to revisit in a few years. I did like this article by The Cut and of course, some mentioning of that “ludicrously capacious” bag. Succession Makes Luxury Fashion Look Brutally Basic for The Cut.
Nope. A movie made for cinema. It was sooo good.
I am not 100% sure if I have included this or not, but I thought I would revisit Molly Baz’s Altadena home over at Domino. I would eat off that bathroom floor and bathe in chardonnay in that bathtub.
If you can get past all the stock videos, this video was sad and enlightening at the same time. The friendship recession at The Big Think.
How Bad Is Alcohol, Really? at The Walrus. I read this on a Friday night while drinking a glass of wine. :)
If you ever wanted to know every ingredient goes into an Oreo. Well, I have the video for you: Food Scientist Breaks Down Every Oreo Ingredient at WSJ.
A durian bubble tea which Daniel says taste like spoiled potatoes. Honestly, it hit the spot for me. Dankness reigns.
The Meltdown of a Gay Bank at Intelligencer is truly something of a masterpiece. Someone hire a DEI director immediately.
A clickbait article took a hard pivot and was better than expected. Taylor Swift’s breakup is not fake news at Embedded.
We should be outraged!!! Yet no one is outraged??? Rogers to acquire TTC wireless network, bring 5G to Toronto subway system at Global News. Alternative headline: Rogers monopolizes Canadian wireless network to reduce consumer choice, slow innovation, acquire customer data and maximize profits. I’m sure if you dig hard enough, some Toronto politicians have ties to the Rogers family (ahem, John Tory, which wasn’t even a secret).
There was a moment in time when I didn’t care much for Alison Roman because I found her approach to cooking too rudimentary. But now I get it, it’s accessible and I was just being a food snob. After listening to The Active Voice: Alison Roman is bored of Instagram on Substack, I see myself in Alison. It’s giving me elderly millennial energy which she calls herself and so do I. Doesn’t care for social media, same. Is an opinion writer, me too. And much more relatable content!
Thanks for reading and wear sunscreen.
