Morning,
This coming weekend is daylight saving time and please let me know if you lived to tell about it. To all the provinces that participate, I feel your suffering. I learned that it’s saving, not savings. My whole life is a lie.
A few weeks ago I purchased a 100 pack of Derby double edge razor blades and the quality is phenomenal. I might even claim life changing. There have been a few knicks, but nothing that time can’t fix. I would say the shave is close. It feels really intimate and smooth and maybe the need to shave is less? Saving time and money, but I actually enjoy shaving. As tedious as it sounds, starting with the process of waiting for the tap to get to the right temperature, shaving small strokes starting with the grain and then against it, rinsing the blade about every 2-5 strokes and finally exercising my due diligence when it arrives to my prized facial hair, the moustache. There’s been plenty of occasions where I shave one side more than the other. Leading to a bit of anxiety that someone will notice and call me out on it. All in my head.
For a hot second, I thought about what my life would be like if I was an alt gay who loves Dua Lipa and Bruno Mars, did ridiculous tik tok trends, partied on Fire Island and went to every circuit party imaginable sporting the hottest speedos a 34 year can wear. I feel like life would be relatively easy?
This week, The New York Times finally sent their final email reminder to update my billing, one of many. I enjoy reading The New York Times, my go to categories are: real estate, style, t magazine and travel. Lately, I have been percolating on how I consume the news outside major outlets like NYTs, CBC, The Toronto Star, et al. While they serve a purpose in reporting things, as it happens, I think about what if there were other publications that had more time to ruminate on subjects a bit deeper that required more research. The last couple of months, I have instead been reading more progressively left publications like The Walrus, Jacobin, The Drift and The Breach. These publications lean in to topics that are generally not discussed in mainstream media, perhaps due to advertisers or private donors. I don’t see it as replacing mainstream media, but to compliment and inspire thinking more critically through long form.
Okay. I think I like this new format of me rambling about shit! Thoughts? Someone last week commented that I have a lot of opinions. You know who you are, commenter.
Homosexual Agenda
Haute Suburbia for Grub Street. To anyone who has been to Bernie’s, do you feel it is contrived or just right? As one commenter put it, by the handle markbenl: “the vibe shift has made it to the restaurant scene.”
A quick, not thorough listen of Nilüfer Yanya new album, PAINLESS, which is getting A++++ reviews from all angles of the universe (aka Pitchfork).
The Narcissism of Queer Influencer Activists for Gawker. Recommended by Haley Nahman. No more cute activism carousels to make you feel good by reposting. Lol.
Please help us locate MUSICGRL. Does she sing? Does she play an instrument? Is she Avril Lavigne? Fefe Dobson? Tegan and Sara? Shania Twain?
A national dish is in dire need of PR. Poutine not Putin: classic Quebec dish off the menu in France and Canada for The Guardian. Leave your politics out of one of my favourite dishes.
Too many frozen pre made spring rolls. My mom has still yet to attempt cooking vegan food. More disappointed in me being vegan than gay. Lol.
Does Charli XCX even need backup dancers? I feel she already has good stage presence. Performing Baby.
Someone fire Oscar Isaac’s stylist who hosted SNL this past weekend. The shirt! The blazer! Those pants are not doing anything for the Internet’s boyfriend.
First Haim and now Phoebe Bridgers. The foolish decision to play one of the worst venues in Toronto: Echo Beach. I want to send a cease and desist letter.
The Batman. I went because 1. I once met Zoe Kravitz (see: here and then went to see her band, Lolawolf perform that night. She was also dating Twin Shadow at the time and I asked him to take the picture, who she opened for) and 2. Robert Pattinson’s press looks. Take pointers Oscar.
A conversation between Paloma Elsesser and Erika Hart at i-D. Cringe Miu Miu mini skirt aside, the two discuss body positivity in the fashion industry.
Good luck everyone with the time shift this weekend!
Perry
I don’t mind the time change. What I lose in the 1 hour of sleep I gain in the extra daylight after I log off work. Makes cocktail hour more fun haha
"More disappointed in me being vegan than gay." - I LOLed irl
